Rock Creek Park

Sunday Afternoon Hike

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature -- the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”
~ Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is the first park on the agenda.

"There is nothing so American as our national parks... The fundamental idea behind the parks... is that the country belongs to the people, that it is in the process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us."
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt

The Challenge: 100 Parks in the 100th Year

Dear Wild and Adventurous Souls and Kindred Spirits,

The National Park Service (NPS) turns 100 on August 25, 2016.

And I've decided to celebrate all year long.  So here's the fun challenge: Visit 100 National Parks units this year.

What's a park unit?

A park unit is a general term (determined by federal legislation) to describe an administrative unit controlled and cared for by the National Park Service. Units can have one of 19 possible designations:
  • National Parks (59)
  • National Battlefields (11)
  • National Battlefield Parks (4)
  • National Battlefield Site (1)
  • National Military Parks (9)
  • National Historical Parks (50)
  • National Historic Sites (78)
  • International Historic Sites (1)
  • National Lakeshores (4)
  • National Memorials (30)
  • National Monuments (80)
  • National Parkways (4)
  • National Preserves (19)
  • National Reserves (2)
  • National Recreation Areas (18)
  • National Wild and Scenic Rivers and Riverways (10)
  • National Scenic Trails (3)
  • National Seashores (10)
  • Other Designations (11)

How many park units are there?

409

What happens if I succeed or fail? Nothing.

The Journey is the Reward. :)
